Each hair is in its own stage at its own time. The Anagen stage is the growth stage and can last 2 to 7 years. The Catagen phase is the transitional phase, pretty much this is the hair renewing itself. This stage can last up to 2 weeks. The Telogen phase is the resting phase of the hair. AKA shedding. The root likes to sleep in this stage and their nap can last anywhere from 1 to 4 months. Laser hair removal works by disabling hairs that are in their active Anagen stage, the growth stage. Since other hairs will enter their growth cycle at different times, 6 – 10 treatments are necessary to disable all of the follicles in a given area.

Laser hair removal is one of the most common cosmetic laser procedures. In general, devices for hair removal beam highly concentrated light into hair follicles. The pigment in the follicles absorb the light which then destroys the hair. The most efficacious laser for hair removal (particularly fine and light hair) has historically been the Alexandrite laser.
